Frankfurt, a shopper’s paradise!

Frankfurt has over the years gained the reputation of a first-class shopping destination. Whether you are a bargain-hunter, a lover of fine fashion or a hipster looking for the latest trends, Frankfurt is the place for retail therapy. In the city centre, leading design labels vie for the custom of an international clientele, while the city’s outskirts harbour many a hidden jewel. According to Global Blue’s “Tourist Barometer 2013”, the metropolis on the River Main is Germany’s most popular destination for overseas shopping tourists, with Frankfurt’s premier retail promenade, the “Zeil”, ranking among the country’s most profitable shopping streets.

Frankfurt/Main, 24th March 2014 (tcf). The department stores and specialty shops along the Zeil pedestrian promenade have everything that today’s refined shopper could possibly desire. It is also here that one finds two of Frankfurt’s most modern shopping centres. The multi-storied MyZeil mall attracts visitors with much more than its futuristic architecture, its 75 shops and 10 restaurants turning every shopping spree into a pleasant and memorable experience. The Zeil Galleria, meanwhile, is home to many smaller, individual shops. The views of downtown Frankfurt from its rooftop café are no less worth the visit. Nearby, the very posh Goethestraße, a cobblestone street lined with international designer boutiques, offers a wide range of luxurious fashion collections and noble accessories. And that’s just the beginning! There are many more unusual shops and stores waiting to be discovered away from the city’s main shopping areas. Berger Straße, Schweizer Straße and Brückenstraße, for example, are home to countless shops and boutiques featuring, amongst other things, the wares of up-and-coming Frankfurt fashion designers.

A shopping highlight of particular interest is the recently opened Skyline Plaza. Situated just a stone’s throw from Frankfurt’s fairgrounds and main train station, this brand-new mall is home to more than 170 shops providing everything that the heart desires. One of its premier attractions is the Skyline Garden, a spacious and serene retreat set on the Plaza’s rooftop. It features not only a beautiful garden landscape with lawns, bushes and trees, but also a large café and a children’s playground. There’s also an observation platform offering spectacular views of the Frankfurt skyline, the nearby Taunus low mountain range and the new Europa Quarter, which is still in the construction phase. A modern wellness club, known as Meridian Spa, is also integrated into the mall. This three-storey health spa invites guests to enjoy a swim, sauna, massage or workout, while children are professionally cared for free of charge.

Finally, those interested in contemporary design are also urged to pay a visit to the Museum of Applied Arts. From 22nd March to 22nd June, this popular Frankfurt museum will be showcasing fashion from Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands as part of the “3rd Nordic Fashion Biennale”. The exhibition, which focuses on the creations of established as well as up-and-coming designers from these three Nordic nations, has already been on display in Reykjavik and Seattle. Frankfurt is the third stop of this biennial fashion show, the motto of which is “The Weather Diaries”. Japanese design will also be making a showing at the museum, with the leading works from the “Tokyo Art Directors Club Awards” going on show there this spring. The results of the famous Japanese design competition will be on presentation at the museum from 10th April to 17th August 2014. As you see, there are plenty of good reasons to plan your next visit of the Main metropolis!
