Whether you’re an early bird or a late sleeper, a proper breakfast at the start of the day is an absolute must. You’ll find hundreds of cosy cafés located throughout Frankfurt, one of them being Roseli CAFÉ on Weißadlergasse, a little culinary gem replete with a lovely outdoor area. Situated in Frankfurt’s bustling city centre, albeit in a quiet corner of its very own, Roseli CAFÉ is definitely worth the visit. Guests sit comfortably under a canopy of green while enjoying the café’s sweet or savoury breakfast delicacies. Once you’ve concluded your morning meal, it’s time for a little stroll across town. As we leave Roseli Café, it doesn’t really matter in which direction we head – towards the River Main, the Römerberg old town centre, Opera Square or the Zeil shopping promenade. Each neighbouring quarter has its own attractions and its own flair.

Next, we hop on a bike (or a tram) and head to Frankfurt’s multicultural station district and the “AROMA” ice-cream parlour on Windmühlstraße. Aside from the classics, like stracciatella, strawberry, vanilla and chocolate, you’ll also find unique flavours like lavender, various vegan varieties and the highly unusual midnight-black, charcoal ice cream (Don’t ask, just try!)

Our next stop is LILU, an outdoor oasis of peace and serenity situated along the River Main in the city district of Niederrad. LILU has been in existence for over a century. Back in the time of its foundation, it was still possible to swim in the River Main. Today, sadly, that’s no longer the case. The little river islet is still a very worthwhile recreational destination. Even on warm summer days, the park is not overcrowded. LILU is the ideal place to rest and relax, to have a lie-down on the sunbathing lawn or to enjoy a picnic. Beach-clubs may be all the rage at the moment, but LILU scores big in other ways, presenting itself as an idyllic summertime setting in the middle of the majestic River Main. Snacks and drinks are available in the on-site Ponton Café.

Having recharged our batteries to the fullest, we leave LILU in the afternoon and continue cycling along the riverside to the other end of town, arriving at Restaurant “Blaues Wasser” (“Blue Water”). Situated in the East Harbour industrial park, the establishment looks quite unspectacular from the outside. However, once you step out upon the open-air terrace with its scenic views of the River Main, you’ll feel like you’ve been teleported to the Mediterranean seaside. The al-fresco eatery is highly popular during spells of fine weather, making advance reservations very recommendable. The adjacent bar, set directly along the riverside, is the perfect place for enjoying a sundowner at the end of the day, be it a cocktail, a glass of wine, or a long drink.

At sunset, we take to the road once again, cycling over to the southern side of the River Main. Here, we arrive at the “Hafen 2” (Harbour 2) cultural centre and its open-air cinema. Featuring a vast riverside screen and panoramic views, this outdoor movie theatre is a real summertime highlight. The cinematic programme runs until the end of August and presents everything from art-house productions to blockbusters.

Finally, on the way home, we stop briefly on “Osthafen-Brücke” (East Harbour Bridge) and marvel at Frankfurt’s glittering skyline. If you’re looking for the ideal view (and a potential photo opportunity) of Europe’s most famous high-rise composition, this place isn’t too bad at all. Ahhh, Frankfurt. If only summers lasted all year …
