Tips for nature-lovers and families in Frankfurt

Frankfurt, 11th July 2014 (tcf): Whether you prefer exercise amidst Mother Nature or in the heart of the city, Frankfurt has plenty of recreational opportunities on offer. From hiking, cycling and swimming to carefree romping and roving, the Main metropolis guarantees fitness, fun and frivolity for people of all ages.

Friends of the great outdoors are certain to satisfy their desire for fresh air and beautiful scenery on Frankfurt’s GreenBelt Hiking Trail, which leads past mixed fruit orchards, lush meadows, dense forests and the meandering Nidda River on its circle of the city. The 64.5-kilometre loop runs mostly on natural paths, with less than a third of the route being paved. The circular trail is easy to reach by way of public transport, making it possible to head off on individual stages from different starting points. The specially conceived “Hiking Pass” and “GreenBelt Map” – scaled to 1:20,000 – are two worthwhile travel companions, regardless of whether you are heading out for an extended hike or simply a short walk. The trail is easily recognisable; one only needs to look for the white GreenBelt logo.

Those who prefer the hustle and bustle of urban life, on the other hand, are sure to enjoy the specially developed city tour, “Frankfurt for Non-Historians”. This two-hour guided walk is brimful with stories and anecdotes instead of the usual facts and figures. It provides an excellent alternative to traditional tours and is aimed at tourists interested in becoming better acquainted with Frankfurt in a slightly more entertaining manner. The tour is available in various languages and throughout the year. Starting in front of the Tourist Information Office Römer, it covers the Römerberg, Emperors’ Cathedral, St Paul’s Church, the new old town and the banking district. The highlight of the tour is the visit of the Main Tower’s rooftop observation platform, which offers spectacular panoramic views some 200 metres above Frankfurt’s city streets.
Younger individuals will find the famous Frankfurt Zoo to their liking. The playground there features an exciting climbing landscape with many play structures, spread out over some 1,500 square metres. Included here are a ropeway, a large sanded area for little master builders and an oversized hammock for rest and relaxation. The petting zoo, meanwhile, allows children to come face to face with pygmy goats and other farmyard animals. The new enclosure has been designed to provide as natural an environment as possible.
During the heat of summer, most people prefer to head to the pool, like the outdoor public pool in Eschersheim, for example. There, you’ll find Europe’s widest waterslide and Frankfurt’s largest aqua-adventure park. Vast sunbathing lawns and a stainless steel pool some 142 metres in length offer activity as well as tranquillity. Football, basketball and table tennis are played in the adjacent sporting areas.
With the “Around Frankfurt” package, those interested in discovering the natural sides of the Rhine-Main region per bicycle now have the ideal opportunity to do so available to them. This new cycling tour takes participants along the “Regional Park Route” in four one-day stages. Some 220 kilometres in length, the route leads past orchards, wetlands, artworks, historical sites, lookout points and playgrounds for both young and old. And there’s plenty of excellent local cuisine on offer as well, with farm shops, time-honoured taverns and rustic beer gardens situated along the way serving finest regional specialities to those in need of sustenance. Bicycles are available for hire, while baggage transfers and guided city tours may also be arranged in advance. The four overnight stays are planned for Frankfurt, Bad Homburg, Hochheim and Mörfelden-Walldorf. Individual stages may also be booked, if so desired. And for those who prefer single-day outings instead, there’s the Main Cycling Path, an excellent alternative that was recently voted a “Five-Star Quality Route” by the German Cyclists’ Federation.
