Frankfurt am Main – Highlights 2015

In 2015, Frankfurt will once again be hosting a wide range of special events. Whether it’s a large-scale sporting event, a spectacular art exhibition or a traditional folk fair, the Main metropolis has something for everyone.

Frankfurt/Main (tcf). Frankfurt has been making headlines as a city of culture and the arts for many years, offering locals and visitors a richly diversified and highly sophisticated programme of events. This year, the worldrenowned Städel Museum will be hosting a series of first-class exhibitions and research projects to celebrate its 200th anniversary. From 11th March until 21st June, the focus of attention will be on Claude Monet and his renowned contemporaries, such as Édouard Manet and Auguste Renoir, who revolutionised the art of painting in a matter of a few, short years. The exhibition, entitled “Monet and the Birth of Impressionism”, will show a number of works that otherwise rarely leave their home museums. The Städel Museum has also been focussing on expanding its digital offers. It has, for example, created a digital platform that enables users to intuitively “stroll” through the museum’s vast collection. What’s more, art enthusiasts now also have regular online art history courses available to them, which they may attend prior to visiting the actual exhibitions in person.

At the Frankfurt Music Fair, meanwhile, music fans have the opportunity to test new instruments and attend workshops, product presentations and concerts of famous artists. More than 1,300 exhibitors from 51 countries are expected at the Frankfurt fairgrounds to present themselves and their products. The fair will be open to the general public on 17th and 18th April.
The BigCityBeats WORLD MUSIC DOME promises to be yet another musical extravaganza, attracting disc jockeys to Frankfurt from all across the globe. More than 100 DJs from 30 countries are expected to “spin and scratch” to their hearts’ content while helping to celebrate a unique openair club music festival at the Commerzbank Arena on 30th May 2015.

Those who prefer things a bit more folksy will find the time-honoured Wäldchestag to their liking. During this traditional fun fair, revellers of all ages flock to Frankfurt’s city forest to celebrate their “national holiday”. Countless summer gardens, high-tech rides and live acts make this event, which runs from 23rd to 26th May, one of the most popular of the year.

The Opera Square Festival, meanwhile, is a real feast for the senses. It features a diversified range of top-class cuisine and a colourful stage programme featuring everything from jazz to pop music. Taking place from 24th June to 03rd July, the festival’s eventide atmosphere, with the façade of the Old Opera House brightly illuminated, is truly spectacular.

Sports enthusiasts have something quite out of the ordinary to look forward to on 05th July. Consisting of 3.8 kilometres of swimming, 180 kilometres of cycling and the small matter of a full marathon – 42.6 kilometres – to conclude with, the IRONMAN European Championships ask the absolute extreme of every participant. The event is held before the beautiful backdrop of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region and exudes a unique, festive atmosphere. Lined with thousands of cheering fans, the finish line on the Römerberg is particularly impressive.
Feel like treating your taste buds to something special? Then pay a visit to Frankfurt’s Apple Wine Festival. Held in the heart of the old town from 07th to 16th August, the festival pays tribute to the locals’ beverage of choice, offering visitors traditional apple wine served pure or with sparkling water, as a trendy mixed drink or summer cocktail. Delicious regional specialities, which go well with all forms of apple wine, are also on offer.

A further highlight of 2015 is the Museum Embankment Festival, one of the largest cultural celebrations in all of Europe. Traditionally held on the final August weekend of every year (28th to 30th August 2015), the festival attracts people from near and far, with an average of three million visitors flocking to the banks of the River Main for this extraordinary display of culture and the arts. Participating museums remain open late into the night during the festival, while the museum embankment is lined with countless stands selling handcrafted goods and similar accessories. A multifaceted stage programme provides all-day entertainment, while culinary delights from around the world ensure that no one is left hungry or thirsty.
The Third of October 2015 is guaranteed to be a very special day in Frankfurt. It is then that the nation will be celebrating 25 years of German unity, and the State of Hessen has decided to hold its official festivities in Frankfurt. Representations of Germany’s 16 federal states will be on hand to present themselves in the city centre on the so-called “country mile”. Stages and stands will be set up on the city’s premier plazas, hosting a programme consisting of concerts, films, dance and theatre performances.

The year ends, as always, with the time-honoured Frankfurt Christmas Market, one of the oldest and largest in all of Germany. From 25th November to 22nd December, the old town is transformed into a wintertime wonderland, with a festive holiday atmosphere, more than 200 stalls and countless accompanying events attracting revellers from far and wide.
