According to a study by the Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce entitled “The Health Economy and Demographic Change” (“Gesundheitswirtschaft und demografischer Wandel“), one out of every ten overnight visitors of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region spends the night (or nights) at a preventive care or rehabilitation clinic. Frankfurt Rhine-Main offers visitors a high degree of recuperative value, having over the years gained the reputation of a leading healthcare destination. The fact is that health-promoting aspects and activities, such as wellness, fitness, active holidays and spa sojourns, have in recent times become increasingly important motivators for holidaymakers.
Collaborating closely with the Medical Network Hessen, the region’s leading network and service provider in the fields of acute and rehabilitative medicine, the Frankfurt Tourist+Congress Board recently published a special healthcare magazine aimed at meeting the growing demands of health-oriented tourists.
 
On 20th April 2017, Burkhard Bigalke, representing the Medical Network Hessen, and Thomas Feda, managing director of the Frankfurt Tourist+Congress Board and head of the Tourism FrankfurtRheinMain work group, joined representatives of CODE (Center of Diagnostic Excellence), to present the brochure at the CODE Frankfurt facilities. Since then, the Health Magazine Frankfurt Rhine-Main has become available in German, English, Arabic, Russian and Chinese as both an online and a printed version. The brochure provides an excellent overview of the many medical offers currently available in Frankfurt and the surrounding Rhine-Main region.
The Health Magazine Frankfurt Rhine-Main focuses primarily on the numerous, highly specialised medical institutions situated within the region. Aside from various, internationally recognised research and education institutes, Frankfurt Rhine-Main is also home to three first-class university clinics, these being located in Frankfurt, Mainz and Gießen-Marburg. All three of these university hospitals have gained an excellent reputation far beyond Germany’s borders. The Marburg Ion Beam Therapy Centre (MIT), for example, disposes over highly innovative technologies for the treatment of tumours. The Kerckhoff Klinik in Bad Nauheim, meanwhile, is one of Germany’s leading centres for heart disease, thoracic infections and rheumatic diseases, while Wiesbaden’s DKD HELIOS Klinik has become famous across the globe for its interdisciplinary expertise, which has been achieved by bundling more than 100 physicians and medical teams from various specialist areas and competence centres.
“Spa stays make up the magazine’s second focal point, with thousands of health tourists annually coming to Frankfurt Rhine-Main’s spas and health resorts to find rest and recuperation. Here, main emphasis is on rehabilitation and convalescence,” explained Mr Bigalke. The magazine pays special attention to the services offered by local clinics and specialists, these ranging from check-ups and screenings to preventive examinations and treatment. Detailed information on health trips is also provided, oriented in particular towards the special offers and preventive efforts of spas and health resorts. Wellness trips have become equally popular these days, with the focus generally being on “beauty and well-being”. These types of health trips traditionally focus more on rest and relaxation, while also offering visitors the possibility of undergoing cosmetic procedures.
Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region provide the ideal preconditions for a health-oriented stay. “The region is home to a total of 11 spas and health resorts, each offering a wide range of treatments and therapy options. Meanwhile, scenic natural landscapes invite guests to walk, hike and cycle to their hearts’ content, another important factor for those seeking both relaxation and recuperation,” added Mr Feda.
Mr Bigalke concluded by stating that Frankfurt Rhine-Main is equally interesting to overseas students, a fact underlined by the region’s excellent infrastructure in the fields of research, instruction and education.
