Frankfurt – A Constantly Growing City
Nothing’s quiet on Frankfurt’s eastern front

Frankfurt am Main, 24th June 2014 (tcf): Frankfurt, the metropolis on the River Main, is in a constant state of change. That which was new yesterday looks entirely different today. Construction, renovation, modernisation and beautification work is taking place on seemingly every corner. The changes occurring in the eastern part of the city – the so-called “East End” – are particularly noticeable. There, one now finds the new European Central Bank (ECB), the latest landmark to grace the finance metropolis, reaching for the sky at a height of some 218 metres. That’s far from all, however, with many cultural and ecological highlights enriching this quarter and the city as a whole.

One of the many new and lively urban spaces of eastern Frankfurt may be found along Hanauer Landstraße. This one-time mostly industrial area has over the years been transformed into a trendy and pulsating urban quarter. Today, Hanauer Landstraße presents itself as a bustling district featuring shops and stores, restaurants, nightlife locations and many other commercial undertakings. The International Theatre (Hanauer Landstraße 5-7), for example, offers a mixed cultural programme with concerts and foreign-language theatre performances. The inhabitants of the district are equally creative, having established a “Frankfurt garden” at Danziger Platz. Here, flowers, herbs, radishes and the like are grown in wooden boxes; there’s also a small café where neighbours meet regularly for a chat.

Directly in front of the premises of the European Central Bank, Frankfurt has created a vast new open space were everyone is welcome to rest, to play, to enjoy the scenery and to forget – even if only for a moment – the hustle and bustle of the big city. This new green space, known as Harbour Park, has been subdivided into a skaters’ and bikers’ park in the north, a general sports area in the centre and a lawn and sunbathing area to the south. Two outdoor basketball courts and two multifunctional playing fields for volleyball, badminton and field hockey are also available. The park’s offer range is rounded off with a challenging ropes and climbing course and various fitness facilities. All in all, Harbour Park totals some 3,500 square metres of modern recreational space.
Every second Saturday between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm, meanwhile, bargain hunters flock to the Osthafen (Eastern Harbour, along Lindleystraße) to inspect the second-hand items, knick-knacks and local handcraft on sale there. Featuring time-honoured harbour flair and grand views of the city’s skyline, Frankfurt’s traditional flea market invites visitors to barter for that something special.

The East End has another oasis of serenity, albeit of an entirely different variety, situated near the ECB: Schwedler Lake is a true insider’s tip, a great place to enjoy the summer. The small lake is quietly nestled alongside Eastern Harbour, just a stone’s throw from Lindleystraße. Swimming is permitted to members’ only. However, enjoying a drink on the veranda of the location’s summer restaurant is definitely a worthwhile undertaking. Special events take place in the evenings, mostly on weekends. The programme features BBQ evenings, readings, live music and DJs who lead the beat well into the night.

Sun worshippers, on the other hand, will find the “Beach OST 6/14” beach club to be to their liking. Here, guests relax on deck chairs set on a sandy underground, with apple wine and cocktails providing cool refreshment. Salads and Tartes Flambee are also available for satisfying the need for nourishment. Nearby, a short set of stairs leads down to the water, enabling visitors to relax right along the majestic River Main.
