This closure will initially be in effect for approximately a year, that is, until the Museum Embankment Festival 2020. During this time, urban planners will analyse to what degree the closure has affected traffic in the city centre. No major construction will take place along the northern bank during this trial period. Restaurants and cafés will however be permitted to expand their outdoor areas. Next year, the City of Frankfurt will take stock of the situation and decide whether Mainuferstraße will remain closed for motorised traffic – and open for cyclists and pedestrians – for the long term.
The northern and southern banks of the River Main rank among Frankfurt’s most popular recreational destinations, especially during the summer season. Restricting traffic along the banks to non-motorised traffic will make the riverside even more popular – not only for residents, but visitors as well.
Bus parking will no longer be possible in the areas specified above. What’s more, the bus parking spaces along the southern bank of the River Main (Sachsenhausen side / Schaumainkai) will also be unavailable from the aforementioned time onwards.  New bus parking spaces will however be created at Theodor Stern Quay in Sachsenhausen (17 bus parking spaces, available from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm).
