City Guide Frankfurt
City Guide Frankfurt - © Kraichgau Verlag GmbH

Author: Wolfgang Kootz
80 pages, 101 colour photographs, city map incl. sightseeing attractions, public transportation plan

Frankfurt is a major European traffic and transport hub and home to Germany's largest airport, its busiest train station and a number of important motorway interchanges. Large-scale global corporations and major international banks have established their headquarters here, providing the city with its imposing skyline as well as its nickname, "Mainhattan". Nestled between these impressive modern constructions, one finds many an architectonic highlight of bygone times. It is these locations that this city guide refers to, locations like the Römerberg old town centre with its time-honoured town hall, St Paul's Church, meeting place of Germany's first freely elected national congress in 1848, and the Gothic-styled Emperors' Cathedral, election and corornation site of ancient German kings and emperors. The archaeological gardens and the more than 40 museums, including the Goethe Museum, which pays tribute to Frankfurt's most famous son, combine to make Frankfurt a treasure trove for historians and everyone else as well. Some 20 theatre stages and cabaret venues supplement the city's rich and highly diversified cultural offer, while shopping streets such as the "Zeil", the "Fressgass'" and Goethestraße lure shopaholics to partake in an extended session of retail therapy. The comprehensive city guide also presents a range of traditional culinary specialities while elsewhere inviting visitors to check out some of the city's many folk fairs, festivals and markets held annually in the 1,200-year-old fair city.
