The first Opera Square Festival took place in 1978. The former Lord Mayor of Frankfurt, Dr. Walter Wallmann, was especially committed to rebuilding the Old Opera, and the Opera Square Festival was his way of thanking the residents and businesses of Opera Square, who had to endure so many years of building site fencing in front of their premises.

At this time. the festival was still called the Lucae-Brunnenfest (Lucae Fountain Festival), focussing on the then newly constructed Lucae Fountain. The strength of the visitor reactions helped the festival rapidly become one of the city´s most important events.
